HBCU homecoming season is something you just have to experience to understand—it’s a homecoming, a cultural pilgrimage, and the ultimate cookout, all rolled into one. This time of year is pure magic, bringing together generations of alumni, students, and families, all dressed in school colors and dripping with pride. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have always been the heart of Black excellence. They’re not only about education; they’re hubs of culture, history, and pride. And during homecoming, that spirit is on full display, in the biggest, boldest, and most beautiful way.
And let’s talk about one of the best parts of homecoming: the tailgate. The tailgate is a family reunion, cookout, and block party all in one. It’s not just about food (though, let’s be real, that’s a huge part!); it’s about connecting, reminiscing, and passing down stories while the best aromas fill the air. Everyone’s got their go-to dish, including us here at Carolima's. Rethmiriam’s a hotdog purist, Sameka loves those smoky fall-off-the-bone ribs, and I can’t resist some juicy BBQ’d chicken. And Emma’s favorites? Her husband’s UndercoverBBQ dry rub ribs, buffalo chicken dip, and fried fish, fresh straight from the grease [she wanted to be very clear about this part ;) ], are crowd-pleasers she just can’t pass up.
Tailgates capture the essence of HBCU homecomings—a perfect blend of food, friendship, and family. These gatherings aren’t just meals; they’re a living tribute to Black resilience, joy, and the spirit of the HBCU experience. Walking through a tailgate feels like stepping into a living museum of Black culture, with everything from soul-stirring halftime shows to electrifying step performances—and of course, alumni reconnecting as if no time has passed. Each bite, every memory shared, and every song played is a part of that legacy, celebrating community and lifting each other up.
